In the 1970s, a young University of Miami biologist named Rogerson was working as a dive instructor on the Florida Keys. One day, he was challenged to come up with a good name for an upcoming course. He came up with "Sea Science." - from a junior mint tin."Sea Science" became a reality when a group of graduate students and post docs got together and took a cruise to the Keys. The goal of this exercise was to figure out what ocean life can be found where. Because of the popularity of this course, it soon became an annual event, and the name stuck.
